Over 125 young and talented musicians from all over the county will take the stage at the Christopher Cohan Center in San Luis Obispo for the Youth Symphony Season Finale Concert on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 7 pm. The concert will feature the four ensembles which make up the Youth Symphony – Preparatory Strings, Symphonic Winds, Academy String Orchestra and Concert Orchestra – along with members of the Cal Poly Symphony who will combine with the Concert Orchestra under the baton of conductor David Arrivée. In addition, young string students from around the County will join the Academy String Orchestra onstage for the annual “String Celebration” to experience ensemble playing at its best under the direction of conductor Carol Kersten.
The musical program will include simple yet beautiful string arrangements of Rossini’s William Tell Overture played by the youngest musicians of the group, the Preparatory Strings. Mussorgsky’s famous Night on Bald Mountain, performed by the Academy String Orchestra and “String Celebration” students, will also be on the program. Just after intermission, graduating high school seniors will be recognized for their years of participation and presented with scholarships on behalf of the Youth Symphony. Finally, the music of Borodin, Stravinsky and Prokofiev, performed by the Concert Orchestra and the Cal Poly Symphony under the direction of Nancy Nagano and David Arrivée, will cap off this delightful evening of classical music.
Tickets for the concert are $8 each. Youth Symphony Concerts are an excellent opportunity for parents to bring young children and introduce them to classical music in a friendly, inviting atmosphere where the musicians are peers! Tickets are available on-line at pacslo.org or by calling 756-2787.
